MINING ENGINEERING

Department of Mining Engineering was established in the University in 2010 and has fully equipped laboratories with latest equipments, gadgets, equipments and instrumentation systems for undergraduate program. It has well stocked books in the library in mining and related areas. The computer lab is having latest configuration hardware and software. Students are taken to sites for coal, zinc, iron ore, manganese opencast, aluminum, potash, fluorite and other industrial mineral mining for field experience. Students have opportunities for training and internship in Indian and International Companies.

When students graduate from the Mining course, they develop necessary skills and knowledge to utilize an understanding of:
• Open-pit and underground mining activities, processes, and methods.
• Types of ore bodies; map interpretation; and basic geology to assist in planning and development.
• Perform surveys appropriate to both mining and civil needs.
• Utilize computer software to produce technical reports, presentations, and calculations.
• Perform basic mathematical operations and solve mathematical problems related to the physics of mining.
• Utilize communication skills to effectively communicate and respond to written, spoken, and visual messages.
• Interact with others in groups or teams in ways that contribute to effective working relationships and achievement of goals.

Scope & Employment Opportunities

The mining sector and related industries has always been among the highest paying sectors of the economy. Demand for skilled workers in the mining industry is on the rise and long term forecasts show the demand will last. Direct employment in the mining industry involves activities at the mine site, including underground work, lab work, and field work. Employment with exploration companies typically involves outdoors and office work.

Opportunities for employment include such areas as mine surveying, mine planning, mineral extraction, technical drawing, industrial, geological, geophysical fieldwork, environmental control, assaying, process control and technical sales.

Firms such as Coal India recruit fresh graduates in Mining engineering as Management Trainee. Bharat Aluminum Limited, Indian Oil Corporation, Hindalco Industries, Bharat Gold Mines Ltd, National Aluminum Corporation, Vedanta, NMDC, NLC, Gujrat Mineral Development, Steel Authority, Jindal Steel, Hindustan Zinc, are major recruiters in this sector.

Apart from this, candidates can work as Junior Research Fellow in reputed Institutes such as NT, NIT, NCL and Banaras Hindu University, Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research etc.

Tecnimont ICB Pvt. Ltd, Reliance Industries and Tata Power are some of the major recruiters in private sector. Students start their career as Mineral Processing Engineer, Researcher, Mineral Exploration, Mining Engineer, Drilling Engineer, Technical Engineer in Mine Management etc.
